Dental cover to expand, predicts comparison site

The demand for dental insurance will increase significantly over the next few years, according to forecasts by a comparison site.

Only Insurance, part of the Only group, will be widening its healthcare proposition with dental insurance early next year, amid predictions that NHS waiting lists and public concerns regarding standards of service and cleanliness will encourage many to take out dental insurance.

Ian Hall, head of personal lines at the comparison site, said "increasing demands for better access to dentists and reasonable treatment costs" will lead to the expansion into dental insurance.

"The market for PMI including dental cover is predicted to grow rapidly over the next couple of years. People are looking for NHS alternatives in the light of infection risks at state-run hospitals as well as battles with long waiting lists," he added.

Statistics from the Department of Health have shown the number of NHS dental patients has drastically reduced by more than a quarter of a million since the introduction of a new contract for dentists in April 2006.
